Dakota Life - The Art of War
Since its early existence, art has always been a creative medium for telling stories and providing perspective. Famous painter, Harvey Dunn, used art to chronicle life from the prairies of South Dakota to the battlefields of World War one. As a combat artist, Dunn witnessed and captured the experience of war using paintings rather than pictures.Years later in the Vietnam war, two South Dakotans also followed a similar path. Their story examines the life of a combat artist, the legacy of Vietnam and the significance from the art of war.
More details about James Pollock (CAT IV, 1967)experiences as a soldier artist can be found in an

South Dakota Symphony Orchestra - The power of art & music
“Panorama of South Dakota”, a set of video works filmed and produced by Dalton Coffey, brings together many of the unique elements of the state’s creative scene.
“Great art is made by artists, but discovered by everyone else,” Coffey said. “Everybody has a channel to get to art. I get to use all forms of creative media — music, words, images — and the final product can evolve at every step in the process.”
South Dakota Symphony Orchestra music director Delta David Geir voices the importance of music and the arts in this video showcasing its transformative power alongside the music of Tchaikovsky as performed by the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra and David Kim, solo violinist. “We experience art, we experience music, as a community.”

DAKOTA COMMUNITY ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE (CAIR)
Supporting Artist-Led Solutions to COVID-19 Related Challenges
Starting January 14 through February 26 the SMAC Gallery is proud to present the three works of art from the Dakota Community Artists-In-Residence. The gallery will exhibit Fern Cloud's traditional painting on deer hide, blacksmith artist Talon Cavender-Wilson's series of three metal bowls, and Lisa Nez's infant-sized moccasins showcasing her traditional knowledge and artistic beading talents.
The Department of Public Transformation (DoPT), Dakota Wicohan, and Racing Magpie collaborated to co-design the Dakota Community Artist-in-Residence (CAIR) program -- a pilot project supporting artist-led solutions to community challenges impacting the Upper and Lower Sioux Communities during the COVID-19 crisis. For the pilot Dakota CAIR program, three Dakota artists based in the 18-county Southwestern Mnisota region, Pezihutazizi Oyate (Upper Sioux Community) and Cansa’yapi (Lower Sioux Indian Community) were selected to work for two weeks “at-home” to utilize their artistic practice to design and implement a creative project addressing the impacts of COVID-19 on their community. Hello friends!
Welcome to a special sneak peek unboxing of another beautiful new release from Diamond Art Club and artist Dakota Daetwiler: "Libra." Dakota has been partnering with DAC to bring us her Zodiac series, and we've already had a few released and this is one of my favorites so far! See below for a review of "Glass Mermaid," another work from this artist.
This week's releases will go live on Saturday, August 19th at 9am Pacific Time for Diamond and Ruby level members, and at 9:30am Pacific Time for the general release. Set those alarms!

Special thanks to Delta David Gier, the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra, David Kim and to Dalton Coffey (Bomber Productions) for his vision and artistry creating these videos that highlight a narrative of collaboration, partnership, impact, and the power of the arts and arts organizations.
